Double Treble

Double Treble

Double Treble Fiddlers are two sets of twins from Yellowknife, who have been playing music together since they were in elementary school. They perform traditional Canadian and modern fiddle arrangements; some of which have been written or arranged specifically for them. The group got their start as buskers at the Yellowknife City Market and have performed at Folk on the Rocks, Yellowknife’s Canada 150 New Years’ Eve Celebrations, Festival on Franklin, the Stanton Gala, and the Snow King’s Royal Ball. In 2016 they gained international experience, representing the the NWT as cultural performing delegates at the Arctic Winter Games in Greenland.

The Hamiltons

The Hamiltons

Sarah and Patrick Hamilton are a sibling duo steeped in oldtime tradition, bringing to the stage american fiddle music, to oldtime country to swing and everything in between. Born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, Sarah and Patrick have been playing together since they were big enough to hold their instruments. Having been been raised in a family of full-time musicians, with a Juno-award winning father and local piano celebrity mother, Patrick and Sarah take the stage with a comfort and authenticity that belies both their love for the music they play and a joy for playing it together. Together the Hamiltons showcase traditional tunes and sibling harmonies that will have you reminiscing about days long gone.

Old Cabin

Old Cabin

Old Cabin is the project of Whitehorse, YT based songwriter Jona Barr. Personal, but with a national vision developed through extensive touring and collaborations, Jona’s songs are expansive enough to accommodate large arrangements and intimate enough to be performed solo, always with sincerity, honesty, and an in-the-moment spontaneity. Old Cabin has performed at Dawson City Music Festival, Pop Montreal, Breakout West and shared stages with The Wooden Sky, Basia Bulat, Joel Plaskett, The Burning Hell and many others. His latest EP Saturn Return was released in August 2016 by Label Fantastic. He is currently working on a new album set to be released in early 2018 on Headless Owl Records (The Burning Hell, Michael Feuerstack).

Snow Sizzler with Soda Pony & The Mayhemingways

Snow Sizzler with Soda Pony & The Mayhemingways

Formed in 2013, Whitehorse rock duo Soda Pony is a much beloved Yukon treasure. Exploring small town coming-of-age tales to science fiction scenarios, members Patrick Hamilton and Aiden Tentrees deliver a powerful combo of unique instrumentation, clever songs, and raw, cutting performance.

The Mayhemingways emerge within a region ripe with musical reputation in Ontario Canada. Benj Rowland executes lead vocals and employs a mixed bag of folk instruments like banjo, mandolin, accordion, and acoustic guitar. Josh Fewings anchors the tunes on the drums and elevates the melody with harmony vocals. They are a strong musical duo that converges with “Mind-bending and original music with deep roots in the tradition of dark North American folk” (Tom Wilson, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings & Lee Harvey Osmond).

The Mayhemingways have experienced a full and fulfilling five years to bring them to present day. The duo released their first EP engineered by James McKenty (Blue Rodeo, Cuff The Duke, The Weber Brothers) in 2013, and followed it up with a full length “Hunter St Blues” produced and engineered by Steve Loree (Ian Tyson, Corb Lund, Petunia). They have voyaged across Canada and back again, and again, and set off for Europe gathering touring miles adding up to more than 600 shows together. Their most recent tour was with acclaimed Canadian rock figure Joel Plaskett and his father Bill on their “Solidarity” release tour which had The Mayhemingways employed as opening act, as well as backing band for the Plasketts each night.

The duo returned to Steve Loree’s Nanton, Alberta studio during a welcome February Chinook in 2017 to have him produce a new collection of their brand of folk songs. The new album “Skip Land” will be released February 23rd, 2018.

NWTCC's Common Ground Castle Take Over presents BAMBII

Kirsten Azan, baptized Bambii, is one of Canada’s most compelling new DJs. Whether online or on dancefloors, her political and musical vernacular give credence to dance music’s ever expanding reach, the relationships it helps forge between individuals, cultures and spaces. As proof, the last year has taken her across Europe with Mykki Blanco and to festival stages at WayHome, TIME, Igloofest and Piknic Electronik. At home, her event series ‘JERK’ is still hitting capacity, still D.I.Y. and still true to its roots. Elsewhere, her work has been publicized in Complex, THUMP, NOW and The FADER.

The Royal Ball: Gordon Stobbe & JJ Guy Twin Fiddles

Get your fanciest cold weather duds on and come out to the Snowcastle's most regal dance.

We are pleased to welcome back Gordon Stobbe and JJ Guy to our stage. Gordon Stobbe has just been named to the Order of Canada  “for his commitment to the preservation of fiddle music as a performer, composer and teacher.” He's a familiar face around the north as a teacher and an exquisite musician. Joining him will be JJ Guy, an award winning fiddler from Saskatchewan. Opening for Gordon & JJ will be young fiddler Alice Twa &  Baby Brian's Country Club.

Fifteen-year-old Alice Twa delivers a beautiful whirlwind of Celtic fiddle with inspiration and instruction from some of Cape Breton's finest. She is deeply involved in the Yellowknife fiddling community, performing with an advanced youth fiddle group (the "Fiddle Cats"), teaching new fiddlers of all ages, and sitting on the board of the Aurora Fiddle Society.  She also composes, debuting her first original works on her 2016 album, "Fiddle from the Garage".  Despite her age, she can also occasionally be found on stage at the Black Knight Pub's Maritime Night.

Baby Brian’s Country Club has been bringing their brand of hokey-honky tonk to neigbourhood watering holes for months. You will hear cornball comedy; fictitious tall-tales; pickin’ n grinin’; country croonin; and hootin’ n hollerin’

Known for bringing barn-burning bass and twang, Baby Brian is for the old country, folk and two-steppin appreciators.

Gel-Dégel avec Le Winston Band & Couteau-Jaune

AFCY and Snowking present:

Cabin Fever Reliever

Cabin Fever Reliever

With Andrea Bettger & Kobotown

Andrea Bettger and her band hail from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Their
music celebrates the tradition of Northern fiddle music fused with elements of
gypsy, jazz, and folk influences. The fiddle is complemented by bass and chapman
stick, guitar and mandolin, and beautiful vocal harmonies.

06.jpg

Founded and fronted by émigré Trinidadian songwriter Drew Gonsalves, Kobo Town’s music has been variously described as “an intoxicating blend of lilting calypsonian wit, dancehall reggae and trombone-heavy brass” (Guardian) and a “unique, transnational composite of rhythm, poetry and activist journalism.”(Exclaim!) From their home in Toronto, the JUNO-nominated group has brought their distinct calypso-inspired sound to audiences across
the world, from Port-of-Spain to Paris and from Montreal to Malaysia.

At once brooding and joyous, intensely poetic and highly danceable, Gonsalves' songs betray deep roots in Caribbean folk music, while the band delivers them with an indomitable energy that has earned them a considerable following far beyond the niche of world music enthusiasts and calypso fans.

Washboard Hank

Washboard Hank

With Petunia's Honky Tonk Revue & Ryan McCord

Petunia is more than just an entertainer, he’s a modern musical enigma.  Imagine that David Lynch and Nick Cave had a hillbilly baby, that yodeled… or Tom Waits meets Elvis at Woody Guthrie’s hobo junction.  This is just one way of describing the man known simply as Petunia.  He’s an adventure seeker, a poker player, and a mysterious stranger.  He’s been referred to as “The Savior of Country Music”, and a man who exists in a different era, bringing the past forth as something new to be celebrated and not forgotten.

Petunia grew up in rural Quebec, in exactly the sort of surroundings that a country musician would find idyllic, with old dilapidated barns, secret forts, and acres of unspoiled land.  As an adult, the wandering spirit took a firm hold on his life, so he set out on the road, playing every major street corner across Canada and throughout the NYC subway system, before graduating to full fledged touring musician.  When he’s not on the road playing shows, Petunia is also involved in the theatre world; building side projects, writing scores, acting, or collaborating with theatre artists.  He currently resides in Vancouver BC, and works with several sets of sidemen across Canada, the US and Europe in addition to his own Vancouver based band, The Vipers. A restless wanderer, a musical historian, and a quirky yet amazing talent, Petunia is simply a Canadian treasure joining the greats from north of the 49th.

He started as a street musician playing all over North America where he learned how to present a truly entertaining show. Late at night he would have total strangers laughing and dancing in the grimmest of urban settings. This ability to spread joy has been Hank's constant goal..

The Stradovarious Washboard, from which he gets his name, is a musical phenomenon of the first order that he plays with breathtaking virtuosity. With wild flailing motions he carves out melodies in the most unlikely yet spectacular fashion. Hank also plays guitar, 4 & 5 string banjos and the kitchen sink tuba.

At once elemental and unearthly, Jay Gilday’s voice is a raw and gorgeous siren of the Canadian north, fusing hymnal anguish with driving rhythm and blues. And he is about to inscribe a special chapter in Canadian music history.

On his second full-length record, Faster than Light (2016), Jay’s voice is bathed in a torrent of harmonic electric blues—in turns playful and devastating—perhaps best described as an uncannily soulful brand of rock. This record has earned Gilday Indigenous Artist of the Year from the Western Canadian Music Awards (2017)Singer-songwriter of the Year, and Artists to Watch from the Edmonton Music Awards (2017).
