Bison Eyes (aka Vieux Bison)
Bison Eyes (aka Vieux Bison) is the pseudonym and folk/rock project of Daniel Houle. Daniel grew up in a Fransaskois (francophone Saskatchewan) village, where the neighbours sang Hank Williams tunes and the blacksmith played Cajun music on the violin.
Bison Eyes’ music is inspired by Houle’s youth in Saskatchewan, in a folk style tinged with Americana influences, using acoustic instrumentation consisting of guitars, double bass and cello. The result is a redefined contemporary folk sound, with elements of new and old traditions. In 2017, thanks to a grant from Factor, Bison Eyes recorded two songs with producer Éric Pfalzgraf at Studio du Roi in Quebec City. The first single, Salad Days, was released with IndiePool in the spring of 2018, followed six months later by the eponymous song Bison Eyes. In September 2020, with the help of Clément Desjardins from Films Fovéa studio in Quebec City, Bison Eyes shot two videos: November Vespers and Faintest of Hearts. In 2021, Houle began writing his first songs in French. This marked an important turning point and milestone in his artistic and personal evolution. To reflect this reality, he changed his stage name from Bison Eyes to Vieux bison.
Recently moved to Yellowknife, Houle is partnering with two strong local musicians: Andrea Bettger and Tyler Hawkins.
